If you are looking to practice some snorkeling during your stay in Bocas del Toro? Here we would like to share some insights with you.
Don´t rent the cheapest equipment
For example, masks come in different sizes and shapes and can be adjusted to your face. Make sure you rent a mask that fits perfectly to your size.
Get a Dry Snorkel
There´s no least pleasant experience like having a flood of water come down your snorkel, so make sure the snorkel you are renting is a dry one.
Get fins of your size
Rent fins that are neither too tight, nor too loose, and that doesn´t hurt. Having a fin fall off when you must need it, is potentially very bad. Keep in mind that your feet will be wet, and will often shrink a little in the cooler water, and so a snug fit is important. Don´t even think about not having fins.
Practice first
Even before you go to the beach, give yourself some time to adjust and get used to it. Practice putting on your mask. Adjust the strap so it is slightly snug, but not tight. Fell the snorkel in your mouth; adjust the angle and height of your snorkel.
Go to a calm pool or shallow beach in order to practice in the most lifelike scenario available. It is very important to train your body into becoming comfortable breathing through a snorkel with your face in the water. The key is to relax.
If you are not a strong swimmer, use a flotation device. Either an inflatable snorkeler´s vest or a water noodle.
Choose your location carefully
Basically choose an interesting place, where you can see corals and lots of fish. Luckily, there´s plenty of those in Bocas del Toro. Don´t go alone, even if you are an experienced snorkeler don´t tempt your faith and keep it safe.
Be a steward
All the above tips are about taking care of yourself, but you must give something back to the ocean also. Don´t touch corals, fish or turtles. The only thing you can touch safely is sand, rock, and water. Be sure to ask what kind of sunscreen is safe to practice snorkeling.
