You don´t start any trip with the idea of having any kind of trouble. However, you must be prepared in advance in case of any misfortune. Here´s the information you must have at hand for your upcoming trip to Panama.
Language
As you may already know, the official language in Panama is Spanish. Even though the population is getting better and better in English (and most touristic places have English speaking staff) it is recommendable to have at least a basic understanding of Spanish in case you need to go shopping or taking public transportation.
Local Time
Panama is at U.S. East Coast time, are 6 hours behind Greenwich.
Business Hours
Private businesses are usually open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Saturdays are usually open from 8:00 am to 12 noon. Banks usually open from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
Tipping
The normal tip in Panama restaurants is between 10% and 20%.
Water
The water quality in Panama is quite good and it´s actually drinkable. However, if the place you are staying in, the water quality is not good enough to drink normally has a sign that states it. It´s a good idea to ask in advance your hotel to confirm this.
Electricity sockets
The standard voltage is 110 V, as is in the US, Canada, and most South America countries.
Currency
The “official” currency in Panama is the Balboa; however, the Dollar is normally used. The official exchange rate is 1 Balboa = 1 USD. Just remember that even the Balboa worth the same as the Dollar, you cannot use it back home.
Personal Space
The people in Panama are very affectionate (as most Latin Americans), so don’t be surprised if you met people and they go straight to a kiss on the cheek or a hug. If this is not your thing, just extend your hand with a smile, don´t worry it won´t be considered “rude”.
Important phone numbers
For medical emergencies, you must call 911 (as in the US). If you need the police assistance you must dial 104 and it has national coverage. In case you need to call the firemen, dial 103 to get assistance.
